'Targeted' Killing: Man Charged After Incident In Front Of Bridgeport Deli

A 23-year-old Fairfield County man has been charged with the murder of an area man who was shot in the head in front of a deli.

Nelson Perez was arrested on Thursday, June 1 by members of the Bridgeport Police Department’s Homicide Squad, assisted by the state police for the Wednesday, April 12 shooting death of Micheal Gaines, age 58.

Gaines, of Bridgeport, was found at the corner of East Main Street and Arctic Street located on the City’s East Side in front of Shorty's Deli, said Captain Kevin Gilleran, of the Bridgeport Police.

Gilleran said the shooting "was targeted."

Perez, a resident of Bridgeport, has been charged with:

  • Murder
  • Criminal possession of a firearm
  • Illegal discharge of a firearm

He is being held on a $2 million bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Friday, June 2.

Homicide Detective Tom Harper was the lead investigator on the case.
